Archery Enthusiast’s Sight Back on Target After Cataract Surgery

Keen archer and retired bus driver Roger Kent shares how cataract surgery at Freedom Vision by SpaMedica Bolton restored his long vision, kept him behind the wheel, and brought his sport back into focus.

At 77, retired bus driver Roger Kent from Alvaston, Derby, had always coped with short sight but noticed his long vision worsening after retirement. Struggling to read road signs meant driving and travelling to archery competitions became difficult. With his practice field 30 miles away, losing the ability to drive would have meant giving up his sport and social life. His daughter discovered Freedom Vision by SpaMedica and within weeks, Roger was booked in for surgery at the Bolton clinic.

By choosing private treatment, Roger accessed lens options tailored to his needs. Having practised archery for almost 40 years, he prioritised improving his long vision, especially in his shooting eye. After discussing his goals with his surgeon, they agreed to treat his long sight and leave short sight correction to glasses. Roger says "The care was superb, with every detail explained and every angle covered."

“The treatment was superb. Everything was explained so well and every angle was covered. The team were wonderful and we talked about what I wanted. That was a brilliant piece of advice.”

Recovery was quick! The day after surgery, Roger could read a sign he hadn’t seen clearly in over 40 years. Three days later, he could read a car number plate from 62 yards away. Soon after, he was hitting tight arrow groupings at 20 yards. “I’ve got stunning vision now, how can anybody complain about that?” Roger says the surgery has given him everything he wanted, allowing him to keep driving, enjoy his sport, and maintain his social life.
