0330 058 5023According to the Department for Transport (DfT), in 2023, hundreds of injuries and several fatalities were linked to drivers with uncorrected or defective vision. This is a serious concern, especially as many drivers over 70 rely on self-reporting to confirm their fitness to drive, without mandatory vision tests.
A recent study found that out of 3,000 UK drivers tested, around 1.6% failed a basic eyesight check. Extrapolated nationally, this could mean over 700,000 drivers could be on the road with vision problems, putting themselves and others at risk.
In Scotland, the DRIVE campaign, led by Highlands & Islands MSP and road safety advocate David Stewart, is pushing for mandatory eye examinations for all new drivers, followed by regular vision checks every three years. Their goal is simple: to help keep everyone safer by ensuring all drivers maintain healthy vision.
The campaign also urges current drivers to have their eyes tested regularly. The good news? In Scotland, eye tests are free, making it easy and affordable to protect your vision and everyone on the road.
At Freedom Vision, we support this push for better eye health awareness and encourage all drivers, wherever you are in the UK, to get your eyes checked regularly. Good vision saves lives.
Many drivers may not realise their vision has changed, especially if they passed their driving test many years ago. Because eyesight often changes gradually, it can be hard to notice the difference. Yet poor eyesight remains a major cause of road traffic accidents, making regular eye exams important for road safety.
For some people, wearing driving glasses or contact lenses is a perfectly effective solution. But for others, the hassle of remembering and using corrective eyewear every time they drive means eye tests can be overlooked, and eyesight can quietly get worse.
For drivers who would like to reduce or even remove the need for glasses or contact lenses, Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) could be an excellent option. This advanced procedure can significantly reduce reliance on glasses or contact lenses and is especially suitable for people whose eyesight has changed with age.
At Freedom Vision, we offer tailor-made treatments built around your lifestyle and visual needs. Supported by our highly experienced team and the latest technology, you can expect improved vision outcomes and more freedom in your daily life.
